The PEI Fall Flavours Festival and PEI Shellfish Festival attended the Saltscapes EXPO in Halifax April 25-27, 2014 and what a great weekend it was. Amongst 450 other exhibitors showcasing the best of Atlantic Canada and proudly situated in the PEI pavilion, we had a great time meeting lots of new faces and shucking in oyster virgins to the PEI Oyster Society!
Here is our expert oyster shucker, Matt Smith, who shucked 600 oysters over three days! Needless to say, there was not a dull moment at our booth when we had freshly shucked Raspberry Point oysters to sample.
Matt is joined by Marty the Mussel and Ollie the Oyster who made an appearance daily posing for photos, conversing with their lobster friend and they even took a drive with the Shellfish Festival’s major sponsor, CAA.
Chef Ilona joined us each day offering samples of the flavours you can expect at the PEI Fall Flavours Festival. By the end of the weekend, she had a fan club for her delicious culinary creations. She sampled Lobster and White Fish chowder, Braised Beef Brisket and maple curry PEI mussels.
Our official hotel partners of the Shellfish Festival were in the PEI pavilion and Marty the Mussel and Ollie the Oyster stopped by to say hi. Hotel packages are available at the Holman Grand Hotel, Hotel on Pownal, Rodd Charlottetown, Rodd Royalty and the Best Western Hotel.
Oyster shucker, Matt was on the dock party stage each day teaching you the ins and outs of oyster shucking and allowing them to come onstage to try to shuck an oyster on their own. We were surprised by how many oyster virgins are out there and had first time oyster slurpers state the PEI Oyster Society oath to become an official member of the society.
